1. Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia

In 1968, Sassicaia made its debut on the market, challenging the winemaking traditions of Tuscany at the time.

It was the brainchild of Marquis Incisa della Rocchetta, who dreamt of producing a Bordeaux-style wine to compete with the renowned French “cru.”

Originally considered a “table wine,” Sassicaia later evolved into a designated appellation, Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC. Notably, this designation is unique in Italy, as it is entirely confined within the grounds of the Tenuta San Guido estate in Bolgheri.

2. Marchesi Antinori Tignanello

It was the first Sangiovese to be aged in barriques, the first to incorporate non-traditional varieties like Cabernet in its blend, and one of the pioneers in Chianti Classico to abandon the use of white grapes in red wines. A true innovator in the realm of winemaking.

The story of Tignanello dates back to 1970 when Piero Antinori had a visionary idea. From the grapes of a single vineyard in San Casciano Val di Pesa – within the Chianti Classico DOCG region – he decided to age Sangiovese in barriques. He aspired to give this wine a distinct identity compared to other Chiantis.

Approximately 3,600 bottles were produced and named Solaia, a name inspired by the sun-drenched hill in the vineyard from which the grapes originate. Solaia comes from about 20 hectares of vines and is only produced in the finest vintages (hence it was not made in the years 1980, 1981, 1983, 1984, and 1992).
